The clarinet is a single reed instrument. It is part of the woodwind instrument family. In fact, it was the foundation of woodwinds. The clarinet, unlike other instruments, had no ancestors but did evolve from the chalumeau. Johann, with the help of his son, added two new keys and created a better bell and mouthpiece. The clarinet was invented by Johann Christoph Denner in Germany of the year 1690. Early clarinets were made of different types of wood such as boxwood, and on certain occasions plum or pear wood. Some of the early mouthpieces were made of ebony. Most of today’s clarinets are made of wood or a hard plastic. How to Play: First, you will need to rent or buy a clarinet. Secondly, you must assemble your clarinet in preparation to play (You can find a video below on how to assemble your clarinet). Next, make sure you have a good embouchure when you begin to play. You will want to put the reed on your bottom lip and place your teeth on the top part of the mouthpiece. Afterwards, you will use your air to blow wind through your instrument and create vibrations off the reed. Not long after, you’ll have sounds coming out of the clarinet. This is when you will begin to make different notes by pressing different keys. Then, you will do a few warm ups to prepare your instrument for the music it’s about to play. Finally, you will get to enjoy playing songs of your choice. With a little practice you will become a great clarinetist, maybe even as great as Harold Wright!
