History behind fiji
Fiji consists of about 333 different islands only about 110 are inhabited. Two Major islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu the population is almost 883,000 people. Fiji population is 57% of Melanesian, Polynesian mix. Thirty seven percent descended from indentured Indians brought to the 19th century. Fiji is located in Oceania, Australia and the population is about 916,564 people . Fiji’s main religion is Christian which is followed by Hindu and Roman Catholic.
Fiji was founded in 1643 by a Dutchman named Abel Tasman and English navigator James Cook. Tasman was known for his explorations in Australia and New Zealand. Tasman sighted the well known island Vanua Levu, which is Fiji’s second largest island. The first Europeans to land and live in Fiji were shipwrecked sailors and runaway convicts from the Australian penal settlements. Fiji was British colony from 1874-1970 and became independent on October 10,1970.
